Medical Marijuana and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

April is IBS Awareness Month, an initiative to bring attention to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

What is IBS?
IBS is a disorder that affects the colon, where abdominal pain is present, along with a range of symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation or perhaps alternating episodes of both.

How can medical marijuana help?
Medical cannabis has been shown to relieve various symptoms of IBS including diarrhea and abdominal pain. Marijuana can reduce hypermotility, which is when food moves through your GI tract too fast, ultimately leading to a decrease in diarrhea. Additionally, cannabis has been shown to reduce pain sensitivity in patients with gastrointestinal disorders. We already know that cannabis has long been used as a pain reducer for all kinds of medical conditions.
