This is World Glaucoma Week in Canada, so we’re going to give you a bit of insight on how medical marijuana can help patients with glaucoma.
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a medical condition that causes increased pressure in the eyeball, which causes a gradual loss of vision.
How can medical marijuana help?
Studies have shown that patients who smoked or vaporized cannabis reduced their IOP by 25 to 30 per cent, but the duration was 3 to 4 hours of relief. Studies also show that cannabinoids, when eaten, are metabolized differently because they pass through the stomach and liver instead of the lungs. Therefore, relief could last for 4 to 8 hours when ingested this way.
