In another edition of Medical Monday, we’re looking at how medical marijuana benefits people with Diabetes.
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is metabolic disease in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood. Over 380 million people worldwide are living with diabetes, and patients with this disease have a large physical and financial burden. Learn more about diabetes here.
How can medical marijuana help?
Many research studies have shown that cannabis actually helps control blood sugar levels, and marijuana users have a lower risk for diabetes, among many other benefits for people living with this disease.
The most important finding is that current users of marijuana appeared to have better carbohydrate metabolism than nonusers. Their fasting insulin levels were lower, and they appeared to be less resistant to the insulin produced by their body to maintain a normal blood-sugar level. — Murray Mittleman, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School [Time]
